Mildred Bendall (1891–1977) was a French painter associated with the Bordeaux avant-garde and influenced by Fauvism and the School of Paris. Born in Bordeaux to an Anglo-French family, she studied under Félix Carme before continuing her artistic development at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, where she became acquainted with artists including Henri Matisse and Albert Marquet.
Returning to Bordeaux, Bendall played a significant role in promoting modern art, helping to found the Artistes Indépendants Bordelais and Le Studio, an important centre for progressive artistic practice. Her work is characterised by expressive colour, strong composition, and subjects including flowers, landscapes, harbour scenes, and still lifes. In 1937, her painting Bouquet à la table ronde was acquired by the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris.
Today, Bendall is recognised as one of the key figures in the development of modern painting in Bordeaux, admired for her vibrant colour palette and her contribution to bridging the artistic worlds of Bordeaux and Paris.
