Biography

Maurice Lemaître was a French painter known for his atmospheric landscapes, inspired by the traditions of Impressionism and the great French landscape painters of the 19th century. Born in Gouy-sous-Bellonne, France, in 1929, he developed his artistic practice independently, studying the work and techniques of artists including Monet, Renoir, Manet, Corot and Van Gogh.

Lemaître travelled extensively throughout France in search of subjects, painting landscapes in regions including Normandy, Brittany, Provence, the Loire Valley and the countryside around Paris. His work is characterised by a sensitive use of colour, light and atmosphere, often depicting rivers, villages, fields and seasonal landscapes with a loose and expressive brushwork.

A lifelong painter of nature, Lemaître exhibited widely in France, including at the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon des Artistes Indépendants. His paintings continue to be appreciated for their poetic interpretation of the French landscape and their connection to the Impressionist tradition.
