André Torre French , 1929-1999

André Torre was a French painter, born in Grasse in 1929. He is principally known for his landscapes and scenes of the French Mediterranean coast and Provence.

Torre frequently painted the landscapes and towns of the Côte d’Azur, with subjects including Cannes, Menton, Cassis, Villefranche and the Provençal countryside. His work also includes views of villages and historic streets, seascapes, still lifes and scenes of everyday life.

His paintings are characterised by a lively, expressive handling of paint and a strong interest in the distinctive light and colour of southern France. Works recorded at auction include views of Les Baux-en-Provence, Provençal garrigue and lavender fields, coastal scenes and Mediterranean towns.

Torre exhibited during his career and received several awards. His paintings continue to appear on the French and international art market, with his work particularly associated with the landscapes and towns of Provence and the Mediterranean coast.

André Torre died on 25 January 1999.
