Biography

Robert Antoine Pinchon (1886–1943) was a French Post-Impressionist painter associated with the École de Rouen, a group of artists centered in Normandy. He was born in Rouen, France, on 1 July 1886 and became known especially for his landscapes, river scenes, town views, and Norman countryside paintings.

Pinchon showed artistic talent early and studied in Rouen rather than following a strictly academic Parisian path. His work was influenced by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, and he developed a style notable for strong color, broken brushwork, and lively treatment of light. He exhibited with major French salons, including the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne, and gained recognition before the First World War.

During World War I, Pinchon served in the French army. He was wounded and later taken prisoner, experiences that interrupted his artistic career for several years. After the war, he returned to painting and continued to depict scenes of Rouen, the Seine, and the surrounding region. His mature work remained rooted in landscape but often showed a decorative sense of color and structure.

Pinchon spent much of his life connected to Normandy, and his reputation is closely tied to the artistic culture of Rouen in the early 20th century. He died in Bois-Guillaume, near Rouen, on 9 January 1943.
