Biography

Maurice Louvrier was a French painter associated with the École de Rouen (School of Rouen), a group of artists active in Normandy during the early 20th century. Born in Rouen in 1878, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Rouen, where he developed his interest in landscape painting.

Louvrier was influenced by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, and his work reflects a sensitive appreciation of light, atmosphere and the changing character of the Norman landscape. He frequently painted views of Rouen, including its streets, quays and harbour, as well as the surrounding countryside and coastal scenes.

A close figure within the artistic life of Rouen, Louvrier exhibited alongside fellow members of the Rouen school, including Robert Antoine Pinchon and Pierre Dumont, and later served as President of the Société des Artistes Rouennais. His work is held in several French public collections, including the Centre Pompidou and museums in Normandy.

Louvrier’s paintings are characterised by their atmospheric qualities, harmonious colour and poetic interpretation of everyday landscapes, placing him among the important regional painters of early 20th-century Normandy.
