Gustav Berlin Swedish, 1905-1988

Gustav Berlin (1905–1988) was a Swedish painter known for his atmospheric landscapes, harbour scenes and floral still lifes. Born in Södra Sandby, Skåne, southern Sweden, he was inspired by the distinctive light, open skies and coastal scenery of the region.

Berlin studied at the Skånska Målarskolan in Malmö and later travelled to Denmark, where he developed his understanding of Scandinavian landscape and marine painting traditions. His work often depicts fishing villages, harbours, rural roads and coastal views, particularly around the Skåne region.

Alongside his landscape paintings, Berlin created numerous flower still lifes, characterised by careful observation, harmonious colour and a gentle sensitivity to light. His style remained rooted in traditional Scandinavian realism, capturing the quiet beauty of everyday scenes with a calm and understated palette.

Throughout his career, Berlin exhibited and sold widely in Sweden, and his paintings continue to be appreciated for their nostalgic portrayal of Swedish coastal life and countryside.
