Angel Estrada Spanish, 1933-2022

Ángel Estrada Escanciano was a Spanish painter and sculptor whose career was rooted in the artistic traditions of León and Madrid. Born in León in 1933, he studied at the prestigious Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, where he developed a broad artistic practice encompassing both painting and sculpture.

Estrada initially gained recognition as a sculptor, becoming particularly celebrated for his religious imagery. During the 1960s he produced several important works for the Semana Santa celebrations of León, including El Prendimiento, Cristo Yacente, La Segunda Palabra and the celebrated Cristo del Perdón. These works established his reputation as one of the significant sculptors associated with León's religious artistic heritage.

Alongside his sculpture, Estrada developed a substantial career as a painter. His paintings range from landscapes and rural scenes to views of Spanish towns and villages, characterised by a sensitive observation of light, atmosphere and the surrounding landscape. His approach combined a strong feeling for place with expressive brushwork, allowing the architecture and countryside of Spain to become the principal subjects of his work.

Estrada exhibited widely throughout his career, with his paintings shown in Madrid, Barcelona, Granada and León, as well as internationally in cities including New York and Paris. His work entered private collections and institutional collections, including those associated with the Museo Español de Arte Contemporáneo in Madrid and museums in Barcelona, Granada and León.

His landscapes continue to appear at auction, with subjects including rural León, the landscapes of Segovia and views of historic Spanish towns such as Pancorbo in Burgos.

Ángel Estrada continued to paint throughout his later years, maintaining a distinctive and deeply personal connection with the Spanish landscape. He died in Madrid in 2022, leaving behind a body of work that encompasses both the expressive traditions of Spanish landscape painting and the enduring religious sculpture for which he is particularly remembered in León.
