Isidore Van Mens French , 1890-1985

Isidore Van Mens was a Dutch painter, draughtsman, watercolourist and printmaker, born in Berlicum in the Netherlands in 1890. Initially studying law in Amsterdam and Utrecht, he developed an increasing interest in art and regularly visited the studio of the painter Henk Meijer. He subsequently pursued artistic studies in Brussels and worked as an illustrator and designer of book covers alongside his painting.

Van Mens travelled extensively throughout his career, visiting North Africa, Spain, France, Indonesia, Bali and China. His repeated journeys to Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco during the 1920s had a particularly profound influence on his work. He made numerous sketches, watercolours and studies during these travels, which he later developed into paintings in his Belgian studio.

His work is particularly associated with Orientalist painting, depicting markets, streets, architecture and everyday life across North Africa. His paintings are noted for their strong sense of light and colour, capturing the atmosphere of the places he encountered. He also painted landscapes, portraits and scenes from everyday life, drawing inspiration from his travels across Europe and Asia.

Van Mens spent much of his later career in Belgium, particularly in Brussels, Schaerbeek and Casteau. His work is represented in Belgian public collections, including those of Schaerbeek and Mons. He died in Oosterhout, Netherlands, in 1985.
