Alain Bouju French , b. 1948

Alain Bouju is a French painter born in Rouen in 1948. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Rouen from 1988 and has developed a distinctive post-impressionist style, with a particular affinity for maritime subjects.

The sea and the landscapes of the French coast form a central theme in Bouju's work. He is especially drawn to the beaches, fishing boats, sailing vessels and harbours of Normandy and Brittany, including the areas around Paimpol, Bréhat and the Gulf of Morbihan. He also paints scenes of Rouen and the Seine, Normandy landscapes and floral subjects.

Bouju's paintings are characterised by lively brushwork and an atmospheric treatment of light, capturing the changing movement and colour of the sea and sky. He has exhibited widely in France and internationally, including exhibitions in Japan and the United States.

Based between Normandy and Brittany, Bouju continues to paint subjects inspired by the coastal landscape and maritime life of northern France.
